What's in my bag? Beach lifestyle session

July 28, 2018

Summertime calls for heat waves, ice cream, vacations... and for me, an influx of family sessions!

Living in Wilmington, NC-- a hot spot for vacationers, has its perks (and not-so-perky) seasons and photo locations. Once the summer season hits, the sunny shores are flooded with colorful umbrellas, families of many, and... photographers!

While we're not a tropical beach, all-year-round vacation location; we do have a prime season for visitors. And for photographers, that means BUSY time!

Looking back at my own vacation photos, my mom always had a disposable camera and snapped a few shots here-and-there to document some special family bonding moments. Those photos were awesome! But what would have been even MORE awesome, is if outdoor-professional photography had been a common thing back then.

Now kids, memories, moments AND moms can jump in the shot! My favorite approach? Lifestyle sessions (duh!). This means picking things to do and play while taking some awesome shots! It's a great option for visitors (and locals) to capture TRUE memories with the kiddos (or just the two of ya) and still have fun while you're visiting (or living, I suppose).

So here's whats in MY bag right now, plus the added bonus of last night's ADORABLE family vacationing here in Carolina Beach for the week!

Most of my images for lifestyle sessions are shot with my 24-70mm. I use this lens because it is a WORKHORSE! Amazing  quality, tact-sharp, versatile and fast.

Secondary lens, and ALWAYS an amazing go-to, the 50mm. It's the closest glass perception to what your eye sees, making the images appear very attractive even to non-experienced viewers.

Here is another example of where my 24-70mm creates amazing depth, but shoots wide enough to have multiple layers in on image. My favorite shot of this session!

The 24-70mm also works some amazing magic in that direct light! Look how vividly the colors are captured!

A rarity in a portrait photographers bag, the 16-35mm. With my journalist background though, I found the 16-35 to be one of my FAVORITE lenses! Again with the vivid colors and sharpness, at 35mm it makes for a great portrait shot, but still usable for outdoor scenic shots, creative wide-angles and wedding receptions!
